About Continental Airlines

Continental Airlines was founded in 1934 by Walter T. Varney and partner Louis Mueller by the name of Varney Speed Lines. The first flight took to air on July 15, 1934 on a 530 mile route from Pueblo, Colorado to El Paso, Texas. The ownership changed hands many times until Robert F. Six bought it in 1937 and changed the name to Continental Airlines. The company H.Q was moved in the same year from El Paso to Denver.
The holding company for Continental Airlines and United Airlines is United Continental Holdings. It employs more than 80,000 employees all over the world with the largest hub in Houston where the company has a significant presence. United Airlines and Continental Airlines operate independently at present as the single operating certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration is due only by the end of 2011.
